HGV Driver Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship as an HGV driver is the direct route to the wheel of a lorry — and it is a good deal more than driving. You gain the relevant driving licence categories through the company, learn load securing, how to assess the technical condition of your vehicle, how to apply driving and rest times correctly and how to handle the paperwork that goes with every run.

In the GV Trucknet group you train with a real fleet and a workshop of our own behind you. At the start you sit alongside experienced colleagues in the cab; later you drive your own routes.

Apprenticeship duration: Three years.

What you will learn

  • Obtaining the required driving licence categories and the basic qualification under the BKrFQG (Professional Drivers' Qualification Act)
  • Driving and manoeuvring articulated and drawbar combinations
  • Load securing in line with recognised technical rules
  • Daily vehicle checks, identifying and reporting technical defects
  • Driving and rest times, the driver card and the digital tachograph
  • Transport documents, load documentation and dealing with customers at the loading bay

What you should bring

  • A school-leaving certificate and enjoyment of driving and technology
  • The minimum age for the relevant driving licence categories at the appropriate stage of the apprenticeship
  • Reliability and a sense of responsibility
  • Willingness to start early and, depending on the assignment, to be away for several days at a time
